Executive Education Seminar in Strategic Planning
The Executive Education Seminar in Strategic Planning is based on the collective experience of the experts within Horizon Strategies made up of senior military leaders with extensive leadership, strategy and policy formulation, and strategic and operational planning experience along with the academic excellence, research, and graduate instruction of the Creighton Business Institute, Heider College of Business. This synergy translates to a dynamic and challenging experience for seminar participants. This is a four-day, 32-hour seminar, that provides three Creighton University continuing education credits.
A faculty-enabled seminar approach provides the following unique learning opportunities:

- Evaluating diverse viewpoints
- Reflecting on complex issues
- Refining one’s thinking
In this environment, students learn not only from readings and preparation, but, more importantly, from the diverse group of experiences and perspectives brought forward by their peers and the faculty during the seminar. Dynamic, flexible, interactive, and highly effective, individual student commitment and preparation, combined with valued and productive seminar experiences are what make up the “gold standard” of this program.
- Analyze the various strategy theories, and how they inform development of strategy and implementation plans
- Analyze and learn to apply a strategic planning model
- Analyze how culture and mission interact to affect organizational climate and the ability of leaders to affect change
- Analyze the concepts of leader vision, and intent enable the creation and effective application of both
- Analyze the concepts of organizational adaptation and change, and understand how to assimilate change, provide predictability, and help others understand the reasons, advantages, and inherent risks of change
- Analyze communication as an essential function of leadership and strategy implementation, and understand how to synchronize communications across a large, complex, and diversified organization
Major General (Ret) Allen W. Batschelet is a principal and co-founder of Horizon Strategies, culminated a distinguished career in the US Army as the Chief of Staff of US Strategic Command. Prior to that assignment, he was the Commander of the US Army Recruiting Command. General Batschelet is a combat veteran and a highly experienced senior leader who has commanded at every level in the Army. He possesses a deep expertise in developing command climate, formulating commander’s intent, demonstrating command presence, and practicing effective organizational communications.
Dr. Todd C. Darnold is the inaugural Charles “Mike” Harper Endowed Chair in Business Leadership, an Associate Professor, and the Director of Leadership Programs in the Heider College of Business, Creighton University. With a research emphasis on talent management and organizational leadership, Dr. Darnold holds a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa, and a B.S. from Iowa State University.
Dr. Eric Neuman is an Associate Professor of Management at Creighton University. Dr. Neuman holds a Business Ph.D. in Management and Organizations from the University of Michigan, a M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin, and a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Notre Dame.
Colonel (Ret) Jim Boling is a US Army combat veteran with 34 years of distinguished service; culminating as a professor at the US Army War College. A Magna Cum Laude graduate of the US Naval War College, he holds four Masters Degrees and is a nationally-recognized writer. Also an Army historian, Colonel Boling often conducts battlefield staff rides as leadership-focused experiential learning and team building activities for academia and industry. He is an expert strategist, and served the last 10 years of his career as a staff leader and advisor at the 4-star level; including two years as the chief of the War Plans Division of the Army Staff in the Pentagon.
Colonel (Ret) Bill Harmon is a principal and co-founder of Horizon Strategies, specialized in strategy and plans throughout his 26-year Army career. A former Chief of Plans for US Africa Command, Colonel Harmon has held staff leadership positions on numerous four-star level staffs and with the Secretary of Defense. He holds numerous Master’s degrees, and was a post-graduate fellow in international relations and security at both MIT and the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies. He possesses substantial experience in strategic planning and policy formulation, and will contribute to curriculum development as well as providing oversight of the program.
Dr. Lance Frazier holds a PhD in Management, with an emphasis on organizational behavior, from Oklahoma State University. He earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Oklahoma State and a MBA from Oklahoma City University. He joined the faculty at Creighton’s Heider College of Business in the fall of 2015 after being on faculty for five years at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Prior to returning to school to pursue his PhD, Dr. Frazier worked for nearly ten years in telecommunications. One of his responsibilities in this role was to deliver training to field operations staff on the use of new inventory database systems. Dr. Frazier’s research focuses primarily on the strategic factors in organizations that encourage employees to be more proactive in their work.
Dr. Regina Taylor is an Assistant Professor of Management at Creighton University’s Heider College of Business. She graduated from the University of Central Florida where she earned her Ph.D. in Management. She holds a B.S. and M.B.A. from Florida A&M University as well as a M.A. in Human Resources and Industrial Relations from the University of Minnesota. Prior to pursuing her Ph.D., Dr. Taylor spent six years in corporate America rising to the rank of Manager of Human Resources. Her corporate experience includes positions at The Walt Disney Company in Burbank, CA, Johnson & Johnson in Ft. Washington, PA and Medtronic in Minneapolis, MN.
