Managing Projects - The Fundamentals with Agile & Software Tools Applied

This course builds on the Fundamentals of the Project Management Body of Knowledge by providing exposure to additional methodologies.  The participant is provides case studies and can apply and test the methodologies and knowledge in a controlled experiential learning.  Other methods and approaches include Agile, Scrum and Lean/Kanban.  The impact on current organizational roles, teams, Agile/Lean portfolio management and adoption, success and transformation planning are explored. The first half of the course provides an introduction to process and people transformation with an Agile Overview.  Each participant will create an Agile Roadmap for change. 

The application of the Project Management Body of Knowledge using electronic tools can help enforce a process and methodology is the focus for the second half of the course. It can provide a project manager an improved means to standardize and communicate during the project processes.,, Using any electronic tool for planning, communication and monitoring projects assumes knowledge of PMBoK and project management., Developing the WBS, scheduling, resource allocation, monitoring and communicating using Microsoft Project will enable participants to learn the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats presented by using any software tool as part of project management.  This portion of the class provides access to a computer learning lab and Microsoft Project.

Details:

Participants will learn techniques for defining, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling and closing projects to produce defined and measurable results., This is the second course for the Fundamentals and should be taken after MBA/ITM 501, the experiential learning lab. This builds on the learning from the lab by 1) exploring other project management techniques, 2) applying project management processes and knowledge using project software and 3) applying lessons learned to improve project performance.

Goals:

Participants gain a practical experience applying and integrating knowledge areas and process in project management. Assessing situations for alternative project management approaches will be applied and tested allowing participants to reflect and determine the best approaches for application.

  1. Creating & devising project plans, budgets and Gantt charts and reconstructing them to solve problems and the unknown becomes known during project execution.
